on book covers

156.jpgI just have to comment on the cover of the book I'm reading right now:
Mortal Engines
, by Philip Reeve; I first found out about it in a British book about cover design, and I have to ask, what on earth were they thinking when they put the US edition out? The original cover (see left) is so nice, a great illustration in a classic children's book style -- and they replaced it with this boring, murky, pedestrian cover that from more than about 2 feet away looks like a whole lot of nothing. Honestly, I just don't get it. I guess some editor just had to put their "stamp" on it. Anyway, so far I'm enjoying the book enough that I will probably want to actually add a copy to our library (and get the sequels). So, amazon.uk, here I come!

Wow, you are so right about the difference in covers. I am not sure I'd even be inclined to pick up the book with the alternate cover. It is so boring and indescript. The description of the book on Amazon sounds interesting. I may have to pick up a copy before I leave for vacation.

By the way, hi! My name's Dalissa. I can't remember how I happened upon your journal but I enjoy reading about your findings.

Hey Dalissa! Welcome and thanks! ^_^
I finished the book and really enjoyed it -- got volume 2 on the way from the library. I hope you enjoy it if you pick it up!!

Wow, I read the little bit on Amazon and it's great! Thanks for the recommendation, Sarah. Once again I can't read your journal without wanting to buy something.

Hmm, Rikki, I don't know if that's a good thing...^_^. Let me know what you think of it!!
