hello kitty cake

Hello Chocolate! Hello Banana! Hello Strawberry!

Presenting the wonder of the instant hello kitty cake! These are Japanese snack sponge cakes, made by adding a bit of milk to a mix and microwaving in the included mold (very similar to the ones where you add an egg and put in a mug, but it does taste a bit different). I love these cakes. Love love love them. Unfortunately, finding them is totally random. I won't see them for ages and then suddenly there will be loads. Lately, I haven't seen them at all!

Honestly, I do not understand why these cakes (in general, not just the hello kitty ones) aren't sold here in the US. It's not the best cake, no, but it literally takes a minute to have fresh warm sponge cake in front of you. (Hmm, that is probably the answer...there may not be a lot of people here in the US that want a plain, no-icing sponge cake for a snack.)

What did you say?

So cute!! How big (or small) are they?

SOOOOOOOOOOO cute! And what an awesome idea for a cute quick snack!

oh i have one of those in my pantry right now! found it at mitsuwa in arlington heights. i havent eaten it yet cos the instructions are in japanese & i wasnt quite sure how to prepare it. so a dash of milk & micro for one minute then?

They're so great - I wish they were on shelves everywhere here!

Tenae, I would say they're about 4" x 3"? I'm guessing from memory there.

Emily - I'm going by memory here because I can't get to the box I have right now, but I *think* I put the mix and THREE tablespoons of milk in a bowl and mix, then scrape into the mold. And then microwave for about a minute and a half. Also, after the cake is done, I sort of stretch the mold in a couple directions to get it loose, usually it will pop out pretty easily after that. Go slow though!

edited to add correct directions, whoops!

Those are so cool! I am going to have to keep an eye out for those at my local Asian markets. Are the molds re-usable for other projects afterwards or do they get destroyed when you remove the cakes? :)

The molds are totally intact afterwards. They're pretty flimsy though and I've never actually figured out what I could do with them!

could you please give me the brand name and manufacture name on where I can get one of those molds? My daughter LOVES hello kitty and she would love that snack!

Ha! I just bought one and realized after I got home that ...I couldn't understand the directions.

This was very helpful! Thanks!
